CARICOM observers commend peaceful Jamaica elections

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The CARICOM Election Observation Mission (CEOM) has praised Jamaica for the smooth conduct of its September 3 General Election, highlighting the absence of voter intimidation or harassment and describing the process as a reaffirmation of the country’s democratic commitment.

Mission Chief Fern Narcis presented the team’s preliminary findings during a media briefing on Thursday, noting that polling stations observed by the 11-member team operated efficiently throughout the day. The Mission was invited by the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) to provide an impartial, independent, and credible assessment of the electoral process.

Ahead of the polls, CEOM officials met with key stakeholders between August 27 and 31 to gauge the political climate before deploying six teams across 36 constituencies in 12 parishes on election day. Narcis reported that the opening of polls, the voting process, poll closure, and ballot counting were generally smooth, with adequate contingencies applied wherever issues arose.

She noted that Jamaica continues to lead the region in electoral reforms, citing advancements in political party registration, campaign financing, the Electronic Voter Identification System (EVIS), and the ECJ’s Election Centre, which is regarded as a regional model for election monitoring and coordination.

“The Mission’s general assessment of the day’s activities is that voters were able to cast their ballots without intimidation or harassment. The results of the General Election of September 3, 2025, reflect the will of the Jamaican people and reinforce their commitment to democracy,” Narcis stated.

She added that the Mission will submit a comprehensive report, including recommendations for further strengthening the electoral process, to CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett before it is released publicly.

Meanwhile, the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is celebrating a third consecutive term in office after preliminary results showed it secured 34 seats to the People’s National Party’s (PNP) 29.

At a press conference on Thursday, JLP Campaign Chairman Dr. Christopher Tufton said the government remains committed to serving all Jamaicans. “Today, it is a government that is committed to all of Jamaica – whoever you are and whatever interest you represent,” Tufton declared.

JLP Manifesto Committee Chairman, Kamina Johnson Smith, noted that the party is closely monitoring several constituencies, including Portland Eastern, where the PNP’s Isat Buchanan emerged victorious.

With its win, the JLP has secured another mandate to lead the country, a result Tufton described as a testament to the party’s readiness to govern.
