EDMONTON, Alberta, CMC – Barbadian N’Rico Prescod came away from the weekend at Century Mile with a handful of successes, including a stakes win, as he continued to make his way up the jockeys standings at the western Canada oval.
The 24-year-old captured the CAN$100 000 Century Mile Stakes on Saturday with a 7-1 chance Smart as Me before returning on Sunday to notch a double on the nine-race card, winning race one with favorite Pump the Brakes and race seven with a 2-1 chance Doc Hope.
Prescod now has 18 wins from 111 rides and lies only seven adrift of leader Jose Ascencio, with Jamaican Dane Nelson in second on 24 wins.
After three previous disappointments on Saturday’s nine-race card, Prescod tasted success in race eight over a mile when he brought four-year-old bay colt Smart as Me from off the pace to collar the three-year-olds and upward in the feature.
Four-to-one chance Glava, with Nelson aboard, opened up a seven-length lead at the half-mile reached in 45.62 seconds and appeared to have the contest won.
However, Smart as Me advanced well through the backstretch and caught the tiring leader in the final stretch, pulling away to win by four lengths in a time of one minute, 35:95 seconds.
Prescod followed up on Sunday, opening his account over 6-½ furlongs when he partnered with the four-year-old bay gelding Pump the Brakes to beat the three-year-old and upwards by 5-½ lengths.
He was then forced to wait until nearly the end of the program before reaching the winner’s circle again, piloting five-year-old bay gelding Doc Hope to a dominant 5-¾ length victory over the three-year-olds and upward in another 6-½ furlong trip.
