FORT ERIE, Canada, CMC – Chris Husbands edged ahead at Fort Erie after riding his second double in as many days here Tuesday.

The Barbadian, who drew level at the top with Pierre Mailhot on Monday after winning twice, starred again when he snatched race three with a 3-1 bet Shakoo Makoo and returned to capture race six with favorite Getting Ahead.

Husbands have six wins from 24 rides in the season, which began May 23 and wraps October 17.

Mailhot, meanwhile, went winless in three outings on the eight-race program.

Going five furlongs, Husbands made all the running with five-year-old chestnut gelding Shakoo Makoo to get the better of the three-year-olds and upward by a neck.

Husbands were three lengths clear at the halfway mark but were forced to fend off fast-finishing 4-1 choice Crafty Conquest at the wire.

His second win came in another five-furlong dash, the 33-year-old steering three-year-old bay filly Getting Ahead to a 1-½ length win over the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares in yet another gate-to-wire effort.

Getting Ahead was away well to lead, the only challenge coming on the turn when 3-10 bet Heading West challenged briefly.

Jamaican jockey Kirk Johnson also tasted success in race one, combining with 4-1 chance Quick Reload to beat the three-year-old and upward maidens in a 6-½ furlong contest.
