FORT ERIE, Canada, CMC – Barbadian apprentice jockey Da Sean Gaskin secured a spot in the top 10 jockeys’ standing with a double on the eight-race card on Monday at the Fore Erie racetrack in Canada.
Gaskin climbed into 10th place in the standings when he increased his aggregate to five for the season—which opened on May 28 and closed on October 22—at the racing facility often referred to as “the border oval” because of its proximity (barely a mile) to the United States border.
Gaskin propelled the 2-1 chance, Boxer Brief to win by 2-1/4 lengths in the CAN $13 500, claiming the fifth race over six furlongs on the dirt. The race features three-year-olds and upward who have yet to win a race this year or four races ever.
He settled Boxer Brief off the pace before moving up the five-year-old, dark bay gelding on the turn and proving best from the top of the final straight to the finish in the six-path for one minute, 11.05 seconds – 2.87 off the track record.
Gaskin followed up when he piloted the odds-on favorite Autumn’s So Flashy to a half-length win in the CAN $18 900 maidens, claiming the seventh race for maidens, three-year-olds, and upward, over six furlongs on the dirt.
He kept Autumn’s So Flashy in touch with the leaders through the first half of the race before the five-year-old bay gelding became a factor on the turn and prevailed in 1 min, 12.53 secs after taking the lead in the four-path at the top of the final straight.
Barbadian Juan Crawford, the 2020 Fort Erie champion, and Jamaica-born Kirk Johnson, the five-time Fort Erie champion, also landed wins on the card.
Crawford has only two wins for the season, and Johnson is fourth in the standings, on 10, behind co-leaders Edgar Zenteno and female rider Sofia Vives, on 12, and Alexis Sanchez, on 11.
