WINNIPEG, Canada– Barbadian Antonio Whitehall’s double headlined a string of successes for the Caribbean on Wednesday’s seven-race card at Assiniboia Downs.
The 28-year-old rode winners in race four with favorite One Sky and race five with 4-1 choice Spy a Star to take some of the honors on the mid-week program.
Whitehall was joined by Jamaican Tyrone Nelson, who captured race one over a mile with favorite Plum Lucky. At the same time, Barbadian Renaldo Cumberbatch also tasted success, winning race two over six furlongs with favorite Not Afraid.
Trinidadian Prayven Badrie got in on the act later on the card, pairing with favorite Goldeneye to capture race six over 7-½ furlongs.
Jorge Carreno leads the standings with 46 wins, with Cumberbatch second on 26 and Whitehall back in third on 20.
Whitehall, a two-time champion at Assiniboia, opened his account over six furlongs when he partnered with three-year-old bay gelding One Sky to beat the three-year-old and upward maidens by 1-½ lengths.
Jeff Fa showed a two-to-one chance before One Sky challenged on the turn, sparking a duel into the late stretch before Whitehall eventually prevailed.
Whitehall’s second win came in another six-furlong sprint when he guided four-year-old chestnut filly Spy a Star to a two-length score over the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares.
Spy a Star stalked pacesetter Outclassed you before bidding on the turn and drawing off to win handsomely.
