Badrie steals the show with three successive wins

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, CMC –Trinidad & Tobago jockey Prayven Badrie shot to the top of the jockeys’ standings when he led a Caribbean sweep for the second straight day on Tuesday at the Assiniboia Downs racetrack in Canada.

Barrie, a former T&T and Assiniboia champion jockey, logged a hat-trick of wins on the seven-race card, moved his aggregate to six for the season – which opened on May 20 and closed on September 17 – and has taken over the lead in the jockeys’ standings.

Fellow Trinidadians Sven Balroop, Ronald Ali, and the Barbadian pair of Shavon Belle and Damario Bynoe also posted wins on the card on mounts saddled by Barbadian trainer Devon Gittens.

Ali has five wins, and he is second in the jockeys’ table; Bynoe is third on four; Balroop is fourth on three, and this was the first win of the season for Belle; while Gittens has saddled four winners and is second in the trainers’ standings, two behind Jerry Gourneau.

Badrie got into the frame when he steered the 2-1 bet Diane’s Wish to a half-length win in the CAN $10 050, claiming the second race over five furlongs on the dirt course, where all the day’s racing took place.

At the break, Diane’s Wish bumped Get Up Early under Barbadian jockey Dario Dalrymple. Still, it recovered to make an excellent wide move on the final turn before the four-year-old, dark bay filly took over in the middle of the final straight and gradually drew away to finish in one minute, 00.88 seconds.

Badrie returned to the winning circle when he drove the odds-on favorite, exacting a commanding nine-length win in the CAN $ 16,500 allowance option and claiming the third race over seven furlongs.

He put Exacting to force the pace on the outside, got the five-year-old bay gelding to extend early in the homestretch, and drew away to clock 1 min, 26.06 secs – 2.86 off the track record.

Barrie was more successful when he piloted the 5-1 choice JJ’s American Diva to a half-length in the CAN $10 300 claiming the fourth race over five furlongs.

He raced JJ’s American Diva at the back early, but he advanced the five-year-old bay mare on the inside late in the turn, split horses early in the final straight, rallied on the inside before taking over late to win in a time of 1:00.80.

Earlier, Balroop opened the day’s race card with a three-length win aboard the 2-1 chance Saber Queen in the CAN $14 800, claiming their first race over five furlongs in a time of 59.91 secs.

After Badrie’s hat trick, Belle followed up with a win by a neck on the 3-2 favorite Tecate Gold – trained by Gittens – in the CAN $10 200 claiming the fifth race over five furlongs for a time of 1:01.05.

Bynoe got next with a score by 1-3/4 lengths on the 3-1 chance Venti – trained by Gittens – in the CAN $18 000 allowance sixth race over five furlongs with a time of 59.39 – 2.59 off the track record.

And Ali closed out the day’s racing with a win by 2-1/2 lengths astride the odds-on favorite No Show No Call in the CAN $ 20,700 maiden particular weight seventh and final race over five furlongs for a time of 1:01.31.
