PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – The Haitian National Police (PNH) on Wednesday said they had arrested a colleague in connection with the murder of a 14-year-old girl earlier this month.
They said that the officer had surrendered on Tuesday as the probe continues into the January 11 murder of the 14-year-old Fédora Vitté, who died after being struck by a bullet fired by a police officer.
Media reports said that the officer had a dispute with the victim’s mother over a damaged electrical wire on the same day, which was also the teenager’s birthday.
The media reports said that the child tried to intervene in the dispute and was shot in the process. She was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said that they have also arrested a 36-year-old man, believed to be the second-in-command of Simon Pelé’s gang, who is accused of, among other things, murder, kidnapping, robbery, and rape.
The man was arrested in the Grand’Anse department on Tuesday.
Criminal gangs, which have vowed to overthrow the government in Haiti, have taken over a significant portion of the capital and are blamed for multiple murders, kidnappings, and rapes.
