PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Haiti has signed an agreement with Taiwan that will result in efforts to increase and improve rice production in the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
Agriculture Minister Vernet Joseph and Wen-Jiann KU, the Taiwanese Ambassador, signed the agreement.
According to a statement issued here, the project targets the country’s three major rice production areas: the Maribaroux Plain (Northeast), the Northern Plain, the Saint Raphael Valley, and the Cayes and Torbeck Plains (South).
The agreement will also help consolidate the achievements of the project to Strengthen National Rice Seed Production (RESPONSE) while waiting for a new project to be designed.
Joseph said this project is part of the efforts that the government intends to deploy to address the problem of food insecurity with pragmatism and determination.
He said the agreement is an opportunity to continue supporting Haitian rice farmers, adding, “This will be an intervention to consolidate the efforts already deployed since 2019 in these regions.”
For his part, the Taiwanese diplomat said, “With these implementation agreements, Taiwan is continuing its support for national rice production, especially during these difficult times when widespread insecurity affects agricultural production.”
The idea is to contribute to the food security of the Haitian population. At the end of his mission, the diplomat believes that “food self-sufficiency is the foundation of a state’s sovereign development.”
