PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC—Haiti and Colombia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide exchange programs and initiatives to strengthen food security, support smallholder agriculture, and promote rural commercialization.
The MoU was signed by Leslie Voltaire, head of the Transitional President Council, and Gustavo Petro Urrego, president of Colombia, who met in Jacmel for bilateral talks.
According to the Joint Declaration issued following the discussions, both parties signed an MoU to collaborate on environmental projects, including ecological restoration, renewable energy, and transboundary water management.
In addition, the two leaders highlighted the importance of Haiti’s historical role in the independence of Latin America and the commitment to promote cultural exchanges between the two countries.
Regarding security and defense, the two countries signed a MoU to strengthen their cooperation in security matters, including training forces to combat transnational crimes.
The Joint Declaration stated that discussions also focused on creating educational opportunities for Haitian youths, including learning Spanish, developing virtual education, and collaboration between academic institutions in both countries.
” The two parties, within the framework of a Memorandum of Understanding, reiterated their commitment to intensifying trade and stimulating bilateral investments, particularly in support of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).”
The document said that according to Article 2 of the Regulations of the International Cooperation and Assistance Fund (FOCAI), Colombia is committed to providing humanitarian aid to Haiti through modalities such as financial aid, food assistance, and the donation of goods.
