GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyana’s Home Affairs Minister, Robeson Benn, is encouraging the use of body cameras by members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in the execution of their daily operations and stated that more cameras would be acquired with funds from the 2024 budget.

On Wednesday at the ministry’s 2024 year-in-review press conference, Benn said this would improve accountability, transparency, and public trust.

Currently, the force has about 140 pieces of equipment spread across the 12 policing divisions.

According to Benn, GUY$90.6 billion has been earmarked for the security sector this year. And out of that amount, significant funds are expected to be spent using technology and new infrastructure for the Joint Services.

In addition to body cameras, Benn said cameras would also be set up at police stations across the country, and additional breathalyzer testing kits have been purchased and are awaiting certification.

“We have spoken to the Police. They have 140 body cameras and more to come in the budget, and the breathalyzer testing equipment is here. They are awaiting certification at the Bureau of Standards,” Benn said.
