NEW DELHI, India, CMC – Guyana’s Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo, Tuesday held talks with External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on cooperation in energy, trade, and agriculture.

A statement from the External Affairs Ministry quoted Jagdeo, who is on a one-week visit to India, saying he had discussed with Jaishanka “our historical relationship and greater opportunities in contemporary partnership, especially in trade, energy, agriculture, skills, and people-to-people ties.”

Jaishankar later tweeted that they had “also agreed that greater frequency of India-CARICOM contacts will further galvanize ties.”

The two men also discussed India’s Presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20), an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union. It works to address significant issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development.

Jaishankar said Jagdeo was assured that concerns of the Global South would be strongly represented during India’s G20 Presidency.

Jagdeo also held talks with Agriculture, Farmers, and Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, who later tweeted that” many agriculture-related issues” were discussed.

He said the agricultural trade between the two countries is set to increase.

Jagdeo also met with the private sector group here.

Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfan Ali, visited India in January, noting that India will continue to engage the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country on a possible long-term supply deal for oil produced in the offshore Stabroek Block.
