GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – One Communications (Guyana) Inc says it will invest US$25 million this year to expand fibre connectivity, strengthen mobile capacity, and enhance network resilience across Guyana.

Chief executive officer, Abraham Smith, told the Guyana Energy Conference & Supply Chain Expo, that telecommunications infrastructure is a critical enabler of the country’s rapid economic expansion, particularly across the energy and industrial sectors.

“Real-time communication once supported operations. Today, it powers them,” Smith said, adding that as “Guyana grows, our responsibility as an essential infrastructure provider is to invest ahead of demand and build systems that allow businesses and communities to scale with confidence.”

One Communications (Guyana) Inc, which was established in 1991 as GT&T, said that over the past 15 years, it has invested more than US$250 million in network development, including US$100 million in fibre infrastructure.

The company said that the additional US$25 million investment this year will focus on expanding fibre into emerging economic corridors, strengthening subsea and terrestrial capacity, and improving redundancy for mission-critical operations.

Smith highlighted the Wales corridor, where ongoing work is developing Guyana’s Gas-to-Energy project, as an example of how digital infrastructure must keep pace with national projects.

“Connectivity is no longer a privilege; it is a promise. Our role is clear: to invest ahead of demand, build systems that hold under pressure, ensure inclusion beyond the coast, and strengthen the digital backbone that allows this country to move with confidence,” Smith added.

According to the company’s website, its fibre network now serves more than 180,000 homes and businesses nationwide, with approximately 79 per cent of the footprint located outside the capital, Georgetown.
