GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana government said it has so far processed GUY$6.2 billion (One Guyana dollar = 0.004 cents) under the National Cash Grant Initiative and is urging members of the public to complete the self-registration process.
“If they encounter perhaps heavy traffic at the initial attempt, as I have previously indicated, I want to urge them perhaps to log in later at a time when the traffic might be a little bit slower because we are seeing very heavy traffic volumes up to now,” Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh as he provided an update on Monday night to the country on the programme.
President Irfaan Ali announced the GUY$100,000 grant initiative following the re-election of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration in September last year.
The first phase targeted central government employees, and Singh said a total of 48,858 persons in this category received their cash grants directly into their bank accounts. The government has since expanded access through an online registration portal, allowing citizens to apply from home.
He said that within four days of the platform’s launch, 26,639 people had completed registration, while 22,611 had begun the process but were yet to finish. Of those who registered, 13,168 applicants have had their information verified and processed, with payments credited within 24 hours.
Singh said that, combined with the initial phase, the total now stands at 62,026 persons whose grants have been processed.
“I want to urge all of them to complete the process, to log in once again and to complete their self-registration,” Singh said, adding that verification and payment processing will continue in successive batches as more applications are completed.
He said persons without bank accounts are encouraged to open one to access faster digital payments, even as he acknowledged that alternative arrangements will be implemented in a later phase to ensure full inclusion.
