Ballot boxes confirmed safe after convoy mishap on East Coast

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has confirmed that all election materials, including ballot boxes containing votes cast by members of the Disciplined Forces, are secure following a convoy accident at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara, on Friday.

The convoy, which included GECOM staff, political party agents, and police officers under escort from District Six to Georgetown, was involved in a crash that left several persons injured. The injured were taken to the hospital for treatment.

In a statement, GECOM dismissed social media claims that ballot boxes were scattered during the incident, describing the report as “disinformation.”

“GECOM has noted a malicious social media post by someone who is obviously a miscreant falsely informing that, as a result of the accident, ballot boxes were scattered all over the place. This is exactly the kind of disinformation that the Commission has been relentlessly pleading must be avoided,” it said in a statement.

The Commission stressed that the materials were immediately retrieved and were in safe custody at its Georgetown headquarters.

The Guyana Police Force is investigating the accident.
