A Guyana court has ordered the deportation of four Brazilian nationals who pleaded guilty to illegal entry and illegal mining in the Mahdia mining district, fining each $30,000 per offence with deportation within 24 hours

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC -Guyana Tuesday said that five Brazilian nationals have been arrested and deported following their illegal entry and mining in the country.

A statement from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) said that the five Brazilians – Antonio Isal Das Soura, 49; Michael De Souza Martin, 26; Clinton Martins Fernandes, 19, and Matheus Sere Martins, 20- appeared before Senior Magistrate Clive Nurse, where they all pleaded guilty and were ordered to be deported within 24 hours.

“The Ministry of Natural Resources reiterates that this action forms part of its ongoing efforts to eradicate illegal mining and to ensure that all operators comply with the country’s laws and regulations.

“Efforts to stamp out illegal mining remain critical to protecting Guyana’s environment, upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the nation’s natural resources for future generations,” the MRN said.

It is also reminding all stakeholders that its enforcement campaign continues across all districts, and that those found in breach of the law will face the full extent of the law.
