GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC—Guyana and Suriname have selected China Road & Bridge Corporation to construct the 1.1-kilometre bridge across the Corentyne River linking the two countries.
“China Road and Bridge has been the preferred evaluated bidder that both countries have agreed on,” Public Works Minister Juan Edghill told the online publication Demerara Waves Online News.
Edghill said the 1.1-kilometer road construction would begin as soon as both countries finalize financing for the US$236 million project.
Guyana and Suriname have approached China to finance the construction of the bridge that would hop from Moleson Creek to Long Island and then to South Drain in the neighboring former Dutch colony.
China Road and Bridge Corporation is reported to have won the bid to construct the bridge, beating off the Netherlands-based Ballast Nedam.
Suriname’s Technical Assistant for Capital Infrastructure Projects had said the bridge would have a lifespan of 100 years and require as little maintenance as possible.
