AFC leader resigns
Nigel Hughes following his nomination to contest the September 1 general and regional elections

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The leader of Alliance for Change (AFC), Nigel Hughes, has tendered his resignation as head of the party that failed to win a single seat in the September 1 general and regional elections in Guyana.

Hughes, a prominent attorney who had been elected as leader of the party in June last year, declined to comment on the reasons behind his resignation.

But he is reported to have taken full responsibility for the party’s dismal performance at the polls, saying in his resignation letter that “the results were beyond disappointing, the responsibility for which rests solely on my shoulders.

The AFC had formed part of the 2015-2020 government here when it joined with other political parties, including the then-main opposition People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), to form the coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), which won the general election.

However, the AFC split from the APNU and contested this year’s general election as a separate entity, amassing only 3,610 votes in the 10 electoral districts.

Under Guyana’s proportional system, 40 legislators are chosen from a single nationwide constituency and 25 from 10 geographical constituencies. The AFC said that it has accepted the results.

Hughes said that in tendering “my immediate resignation,” he was nonetheless grateful to the party for allowing him the opportunity to lead it in “difficult times” and that he still believes that the party holds great potential in Guyana’s body politic.

“I believe the party has a great role to play in the development of this great country of ours, and I wish the Chair and the executive my best wishes and support on its forward trajectory,” he said.

The AFC is not he only political party here to be rocked by resignations following the general elections. The PNCR’s chairman, Shurwayne Holder, has also submitted his resignation to the party.
