Guyana’s AFC announces acceptance of election results

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Alliance for Change (AFC), which failed to win a single seat in last Monday’s general election, has accepted the results of the general and regional elections released the previous weekend by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

“Now that the Commission has officially announced that the People’s Progressive Party Civic has won these elections, we accept the declaration and extend congratulations to Dr. Irfaan Ali,” the AFC said in a statement.

The AFC, which in 2015 had entered into a coalition, known as A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), with the main opposition People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and other opposition parties to win the general election, mustered only 3,610 votes in the 10 electoral districts in this year’s elections.

The APNU was also removed as the main opposition party after it received 77,000 votes and 12 seats in the Parliament.

The newly formed We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), headed by 38-year-old controversial billionaire businessman Azruddin Mohamed, received 109,000 votes, securing 16 seats and will head the opposition benches in Parliament. The Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) is the other party to have gained a seat.

GECOM stated that the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) had secured a resounding victory, with over 240,000 votes cast in its favour, translating into a 36-seat majority in the 65-member Parliament.

Under Guyana’s proportional representation system, 40 legislators are elected from a single nationwide constituency, and 25 from 10 geographical constituencies.

The AFC stated that, although it has accepted the results, its interaction with GECOM was not without its challenges.

That party said it hoped that the Observer Missions’ comments on the process leading up to these elections, including campaign finance and the misuse of state resources, would be taken into account by GECOM and the new administration.

“We remain committed to good governance in Guyana and will continue to advocate for justice, a fair share, equality, and equity for all citizens,” that party said, adding that it spent the last year preparing for the 2025 elections.
