ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC—Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell is heading a high-powered government delegation to Venezuela for an official one-day visit, it has been officially announced here.

“The visit underscores the longstanding relationship between Grenada and Venezuela and reflects both nations’ shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation across various sectors, including agriculture, healthcare, education, and tourism,” according to a press release issued by the government.

It said that the delegation includes Foreign Affairs Minister Joseph Andall and that Prime Minister Mitchell is scheduled to hold high-level discussions with President Nicolás Maduro during the visit to discuss key areas of interest.

Press Secretary Neila Ettienne said that oil and gas discussions are not on the agenda for discussion.

“Oil and Gas is not on the current agenda, but if it is raised, I will share outcomes as it comes my way,” she said when asked if those issues would form part of the agenda.

The statement said the Grenada government reaffirms its commitment to fostering strong, mutually beneficial relationships with all its partners. It looks forward to further deepening the bonds with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

The delegation is scheduled to return on April 29.

In September 2022, approximately three months after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the general election, Andall told a news conference that preliminary discussions had been held with Venezuela regarding the repayment of more than EC$370 million (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) owed to the South American country.

“Venezuela was another one with which we had fruitful bilateral relations. They indicated that they will soon resume the PetroCaribe agreement. This could not have come at a better time considering the generally high fuel price on the international market,” Andall said then.
