ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The main opposition New National Party (NNP) says it remains concerned and utterly disappointed that nothing has been done to deal with complaints that a senior member of the Parliamentary Elections Office has appeared on a platform of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement, the NNP said that it wanted to register “its deep concern and utter disappointment over the continued silence and inadequate response” from the electoral authorities regarding the conduct of Registration Officer for the constituency of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Amanda Jack.
The party said that on May 8, this year, the Supervisor of Elections wrote to it concluding that Jack’s actions represent “a clear breach of the principle of strict political neutrality” and “undermine the integrity and impartiality of the electoral process”.
The NNP said that despite this correspondence, the supervisor has not been removed from her position.
“Ms. Jack’s repeated appearances at political events demonstrate a pattern of disregard for the ethical standards expected of her position — standards that are essential to maintaining trust in the electoral system, especially in today’s climate of growing public skepticism.”
The NNP said that her conduct constitutes a violation of the Representation of the People Act, the Integrity in Public Life Act, and the Code of Conduct, adding “it also amounts to serious misconduct under Section 79 of the Employment Act … and in our view, warrants immediate dismissal”.
The opposition party said that whether intended or not, Jack’s actions “have damaged public confidence in the neutrality of the elections office in Carriacou and Petite Martinique”.
The NNP said that it is now calling on the Governor-General Dame Cécile La Grenade,” who was previously notified of the issue but has yet to respond, we urge immediate intervention in her constitutional role as guardian of the public interest and authority over the electoral process.”
The party is also urging the Supervisor of Elections to issue “a firm public statement reaffirming the non-partisan nature of all electoral staff, along with swift enforcement of the standards required by law”.
It has also called on civil society, faith leaders, and concerned citizens to stand with us in defending the principles of free, fair, and impartial elections.
“The New National Party will not stand by while the foundations of democracy are compromised. We remain resolute in our duty to protect the integrity of Grenada’s electoral system for every citizen of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique,” it added.
