Grenada Opposition Party Unveils Full Slate of Candidates for General Election
The candidate list signals the party's readiness to challenge for power, featuring a mix of incumbents and new nominees.

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The main opposition New National Party (NNP) has named nine candidates to contest the next general election, constitutionally due in October 2027, but widely expected to be called this year.

In a pre-recorded social media event on Tuesday night, the NNP and Opposition Leader said that the remaining six candidates will be announced “over the coming days”.

The NNP, the only political party here to have won all 15 seats in the Parliament on more than two occasions, lost the June 2022 general election to the Dickon Mitchell-led National Democratic Congress (NDC), which won nine of the 15 seats.

“In any other era, any one of these individuals would be a centerpiece of a campaign. Now, they stand together,” Pierre said in the video, describing the candidates as “nine stars, nine workers, one mission”.

Among the nine candidates is the former clerk of the Parliament, Dr. Adrian Joseph, who was named last Thursday as the replacement for former prime minister Dr. Keith Mitchell as his successor for the St. George North West constituency, which he has represented in the legislative chambers since 1984.

The 79-year-old Mitchell, who recently remarried, is the founder and longest-serving prime minister in Grenadian history.

In her statement, Pierre accused the NDC government of “selective silence” on critical issues. “Silence on cost of living, which keeps rising daily, and silence on urgent healthcare concerns,” she charged, adding that “when leadership is unsure of the next step, they tend to go silent.”

She said that the current administration represents “the high cost of inexperience, a government that is learning on the job at the expense of our country.

“We didn’t just look for people who can win a seat. We looked for people who could run government,” Pierre said, telling viewers that the NNP is offering “modern experience” by blending institutional knowledge with innovative energy.
