ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The main opposition New National Party (NNP) has voiced concern following confirmation from the Parliamentary Elections Office that Grenada’s electoral system has suffered yet another software failure, resulting in a temporary shutdown of voter services nationwide.
In a statement on Thursday, the NNP said this latest breakdown is not an isolated incident.
“It is the predictable result of government inaction and neglect, even though the NNP had advanced the procurement of a replacement electoral system and left it ready for completion when the NDC assumed office more than three years ago. To date, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has failed to implement a replacement system.”
According to the opposition, Grenadians are repeatedly unable to register to vote, and, as a result, “confidence in the integrity and reliability of the electoral process is being steadily eroded.”
The NNP has called on the government to immediately disclose the status of the electoral system procurement initiated over three years ago; explain why no replacement system has been delivered or implemented; and provide a clear, public timeline for the completion and deployment of a modern, reliable voter registration system.
“Grenadians deserve transparency, competence, and urgency when it comes to safeguarding democracy. Continued silence and delay only deepen suspicion and weaken confidence in the electoral process. The NNP will not remain silent while the foundations of our democracy are placed at risk.”
