Grenada mourns loss of former youth legislator

ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell has extended “heartfelt condolences “ to the family of Neilon Franklyn, one of Grenada’s youngest legislators, who died at the General Hospital after collapsing on Sunday. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

“Senator Franklyn was a passionate advocate for youth empowerment and economic development,” Mitchell said in a post on the official Facebook page of the Office of the Prime Minister.

His contributions to national dialogue, particularly on issues affecting young people, were marked by dedication and a deep commitment to fostering youth leadership across Grenada. We are grateful for his dedicated service to our nation. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” it added.

Franklyn, 25, was appointed an opposition Senator by the then Opposition Leader, Dr. Keith Mitchell, following the June 2022 general election.

In a statement, the family confirmed his death at the hospital, and Opposition Leader, and the New National Party (NNP) leader, Emmalin Pierre, wrote, “definitely gone too soon.

“Deepest Condolences to the family members and loved ones of Neilon Franklyn. May God grant you the strength that you will need,” she added in her post.

In its message, the NNP said the Party is mourning the death of Franklyn, who was employed as a customs officer.

“Senator Franklyn served Grenada with distinction and dedication during his time in the Upper House of Parliament and as an executive member of the Party. His commitment to national development and public service will be remembered with deep respect. We honour his contributions to our nation and extend our sympathies to his loved ones in this time of loss,” said the Party.

He had resigned from the Party in January this year and, in his letter of resignation, wrote that he wanted to “explore new opportunities that will allow me to continue serving our beloved country in different capacities.”

Franklyn has been described as a passionate advocate for youth empowerment and regional integration.

“He believes that young people have the power to make a difference in their communities and in the world, and he is committed to giving them a voice,” said a 2023 post by the UN in Barbados.
