ST GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – Deputy Commissioner of Police Tafawa Pierre has become the first Grenadian and Caribbean Community (CARICOM) citizen to receive the Great Wall Commemorative Medal.
“The medal is awarded especially to law enforcement officers from foreign countries who have made outstanding contributions toward protecting the safety of Chinese citizens,” said the letter from the Chinese government informing Pierre about the award.
A virtual ceremony to announce the recognition was done in November 2022, but the medal was presented to him at the Chinese Embassy in Grenada on Wednesday.
In a post on his Twitter page, Ambassador Wei Hongtian of the Chinese Embassy in Grenada said: “I handed over to the Deputy Commissioner of the RGPF of Grenada, Mr. Tafawa Pierre, the Great Wall Commemorative Medal issued by the Ministry of Public Security of China, serving as a tribute to his significant contribution in law enforcement cooperation.”
The letter informing the senior officer about the award stated, “as a world-renowned leading official from the law enforcement department, you are among the first recipients of the Great Wall Commemorative Medal.”
Pierre expressed his delight at the honor but, for personal reasons, could not disclose the unique law enforcement cooperation he participated in as part of “protecting the safety of Chinese citizens.”
“It was a regional initiative,” he said when asked what particular task he had done to earn the recognition.
