CARDIFF, Wales, CMC – St Kitts and Nevis international Romaine Sawyers fired a late winner for Cardiff City against Reading on Friday night and believes age is on the Welsh club’s side in their battle for survival in England’s second-tier Championship.
The Bluebirds are four points above the relegation zone after two wins in four days under new manager Sabri Lamouchi.
Sawyers rifled home his third goal of the campaign – but first since the end of August – from the edge of the box in the 91st minute to claim a deserved win against Reading at the Cardiff City Stadium.
The 31-year-old has suffered relegation heartache before, dropping out of the Premier League with West Bromwich Albion in 2021 but believes ignorance is bliss for the Bluebirds’ young squad regarding handling the pressure.
“You can get punished with any mistake in a relegation fight, but this group is different [to that West Brom squad],” said the midfielder, who has made 27 appearances for St Kitts and Nevis since his debut for the Sugar Boyz in 2012.
“We’ve got a younger squad [at Cardiff], and sometimes that’s a good thing because there’s no baggage.
“When you’re young, you’re naive to your situation, and you don’t overthink. You focus on each game as a cup final and still have that confidence to get over the line.”
After going 14 games without a win under Mark Hudson, Cardiff has clinched two from two under Lamouchi.
The Frenchman cuts an animated figure, and Sawyers believes that upbeat personality is turning the tide at the Cardiff City Stadium, now under its third manager of the season.
“It’s all about the belief he has in us. Every player wants to hear the manager tell them how good they are and their qualities are needed, especially the youngsters.”
