LONDON, CMC – Montserrat striker Lyle Taylor agreed to a short-term deal on Thursday with English League 1 club Wycombe Wanderers to boost their options up front.

The signing of the 33-year-old striker, who was born in England but represented the British overseas territory at the international level (being eligible through his grandparents), comes after the club announced that fellow striker Brandon Hanlan is unlikely to play for the remainder of the season because of a severe knee injury.

Hanlan damaged his anterior cruciate ligament against Stevenage on Saturday, leading to an additional 14 minutes playing in the first half.

“Lyle is hungry to prove he’s still got goals in his feet,” Wycombe boss Matt Bloomfield said. “He’s a player of great caliber who’s played at a high level.”

Taylor is a free agent after English Premier League club Nottingham Forest released him during the summer, and he goes straight into the Wycombe squad to face one of his former clubs, Wimbledon, in the English Football League Trophy tournament on Saturday at Adams Park on Saturday.

The EFL Trophy is a knock-out tournament for clubs in League 1 and League 2, the third and fourth tiers of the English football league system, as well as the Academy teams of 15 Premier League and one League Championship club with Category 1 status.

Capped 15 times by Montserrat, Taylor has been a regular thorn in the side of the Chairboys, the nickname of Wycombe, scoring five times in seven appearances against the club, winning six.

He became Wimbledon’s all-time leading goal scorer after forming a lethal alliance with a Wycombe icon, Adebayo Akinfenwa, and he also helped Charlton Athletic win promotion to the Championship with a prolific goal-scoring record, netting 36 times in two seasons.

That form earned Taylor a move to Forest, where he scored against Birmingham City in the Championship, and he impressed in a loan spell with that same club at the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

Taylor, who has not played a league match since May last year, will wear the No. 30 jersey, and his deal remains subject to EFL and Football Association approval.
