LONDON, CMC – Reggae Girl Melissa Johnson came off the bench to net an insurance goal for Charlton Athletic as they beat Southampton 2-0 to go joint top of the FA Women’s Championship.

Playing on Sunday at St Mary’s, the 32-year-old Johnson got on the scoresheet in the fourth minute of stoppage time at the end to ensure the visitors climbed to the summit alongside Sunderland, with the Saints now three points off the lead in the fourth.

Aware that victory would have taken either team to the top of the league, both sides pushed for the all-important goal in the first half, but the stanza finished goalless.

However, Charlton went ahead two minutes following the resumption, the dangerous Kayleigh Green eluding her markers in the box to head in Carla Humphrey’s cross.

Charlton was then forced to weather a difficult period as Southampton pressed for the equalizer before Johnson, a 69th-minute substitute, made sure of the points.

With seven minutes added at the end, Johnson got on to the ball halfway through stoppage, producing a superb solo run, capped off when she clinically beat goalkeeper Kayla Rendell.

The victory was Charlton’s fourth on the trot, leaving them unbeaten in their last seven games.
