LIVERPOOL, England, CMC – Reggae Girl Khadija “Bunny” Shaw opened her account for the new season as Manchester City beat Everton 2-1 in the FA Women’s League Cup.
The 26-year-old scored City’s second just after the break to put her side in command at Walton Hall Park here Wednesday, Toni Duggan’s injury-time header coming too late to rescue Everton.
Four-time champions in the competition, City started brightly thanks to Shaw, who was making her first start of the new campaign.
Goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan was forced into an early save to deny Shaw before the Jamaican-turned-playmaker for City’s opener in the 22nd minute.
She turned Everton captain Megan Finnigan inside out down the right before scooping a cross into the box for Jess Park to finish from close range at the back post.
Shaw sparkled again just before the break when she held off three defenders and burst into the box, only to be denied again by Brosnan.
There was no such good fortune for Everton on resumption, however. Finnigan misplaced a pass in the 18-yard box, and Shaw pounced to rifle her shot into the roof of the nets in the 48th.
During the last campaign, Shaw was City’s Player-of-the-Season after netting 31 goals in all competitions.
