Bridgetown, CMC: Football officials canceled an international friendly match between the Barbados men’s national team and St Vincent & the Grenadines on Thursday.
The match was scheduled to be played at p.m. on Wednesday at the Wildey Turf just outside the Barbados capital, but there was an issue with the floodlighting of the field that prevented the match from starting.
“Unfortunately, there was an issue with the generator at our venue that caused the match to be delayed for 30 minutes,” a news release from the Barbados Football Association (BFA) stated.
“Technicians were brought to the venue, and after several attempts to resolve the generator problem, the match was postponed.
The news release added: “However, after careful consideration, a decision has been made to cancel the friendly match officially.
“We understand that spectators will be disappointed, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused. We also want to extend a hearty thank you to our amazing fans for your patience and understanding.”
Both teams would use the match to fine-tune preparations for the CONCACAF Nations League matches between March 23 and month-end.
The Barbadians have been drawn in Group A with Antigua & Barbuda, Cuba, and Guadeloupe in League B. In contrast, the Vincentians have been drawn into Group C with The Bahamas, Nicaragua, and Trinidad & Tobago.
Barbados opens group play against the Cubans on Thursday, March 23, at the Wildey Turf, and SVG face hosts Nicaragua the next day at the National Football Stadium in Managua.
