LONDON, CMC – Peterborough United has formally released Reggae Boy Jonson Clarke-Harris after running down his contract at the League One club.

The 29-year-old, who has played once for Jamaica, snubbed a 500 000 pounds sterling move to Charlton Athletic during the January transfer window, preferring to find a new club this summer.

He finished the just-concluded season with 13 goals in all competitions, but playing time was difficult to come by after blocking the move away to Charlton. The club opted to rebuild its squad around younger players.

“Jonson has been a great signing,” said Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson.

“He played such a pivotal role in us getting promoted, scoring quite a few goals in the Championship, and has significantly impacted what we have done in recent years.

“Of course, at the start of this season, we felt he would be leaving twice, particularly the first window, but he stayed, and by that time, I had made my mind up that I wanted to go in a different direction.

“It was difficult for him at times because he wants to play games, but he understood it, and I have to say he has been fantastic in the dressing room, great for me.

“He has been a real help because he has never caused a problem, and I think we have a lot of respect for each other.

“I wish him all the best. I am sure he will get a good move and deserves it. He will never be forgotten for what he did here.”

Clarke-Harris was also at the center of transfer drama last summer after being shortlisted by Peterborough, dubbed ‘the Posh,’ for a move away.

Bristol Rovers submitted a deadline day bid for the forward, which both club and player accepted, but only for an administrative hiccup to foil the move.

Clarke-Harris scored 87 goals in 190 appearances over a four-year stint at London Road, including 78 goals in 166 league outings.

He was last season’s Golden Boot winner with 26 goals; the second successive season, he emerged as the league’s top scorer.

Jeando Fuchs, Fynn Talley, and Vontae Daley-Campbell were also released by the club, which finished fourth in the league but failed to gain promotion to the Championship after being knocked out of the playoffs for the second successive season.
