Former international Aloema calls on Surinamese Football Federation to help players with nationality issues

PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – Former international Ronny Aloema is making an urgent appeal to the Surinamese Football Association (SVB) and the government to intervene immediately in the nationality issue affecting several players of the national team.

The 46-year-old former goalkeeper has expressed concern regarding recent reports surrounding the possible loss of Dutch nationality and the resulting legal uncertainty for various Surinamese internationals.

Aloema has contended that the issue transcends the sporting domain and directly affects the legal certainty of players, the credibility of institutions, and Suriname’s international reputation.

His comments have come as Surinamese footballers, largely based in the Netherlands, face eligibility issues due to strict, opposing nationality laws between Suriname and the Netherlands, specifically the lack of dual citizenship recognition.

This creates a ‘passport crisis,’ in which Dutch-born players representing Suriname risk losing their Dutch citizenship, thereby complicating their ability to play for Dutch clubs.

Aloema has contended that players who chose Suriname should not fall victim to administrative ambiguities, legal miscommunication, or institutional silence.

“They must never feel that they are on their own in a matter that was established partly under the responsibility of the relevant authorities,” he said.

Aloema has made five recommendations, which he believes will address the issues facing those players.

He has called on the SVG to provide immediate legal support to the affected players, to take diplomatic and administrative action, ensure full transparency and public accountability, establish a national crisis task force, and protect Suriname’s national football team.
