SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, CMC – The Executive Committee of the Economic and Social Council (CES) held its first coordination meeting with government officials and representatives of former Dominican presidents Danilo Medina and Leonel Fernández to address the ongoing crisis in neighboring Haiti.
This initial session, held earlier this week, laid the groundwork for formally convening the CES following the historic May 14 meeting between President Luis Abinader and former presidents Fernández, Hipólito Mejía, and Medina, where they agreed to pursue a unified national policy on Haiti.
Minister José Ignacio Paliza announced that the official CES convocation would be issued the same day, with formal discussions set to begin next Tuesday, June 3.
He noted that given the complexity of the Haitian situation, six thematic working groups will be formed: migration, bilateral trade, border development, national security, international relations, and labor.
The Dominican Republic and Haiti share the island of Hispaniola. Still, in recent years, tension has continued to mount between both nations due to the ongoing economic and political crisis in the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member state.
