ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – West Indies endured a fruitless toil, and India openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma ground out half-centuries before lunch to put their side within reach of taking a first-innings lead in the first Test on Thursday in Dominica.

Sharma, the Indian captain, was not out on 68, and Jaiswal was not out on 62, and the visitors reached 146 without loss, replying to the Caribbean side’s first innings total of 150, at the interval on the second of the match at Windsor Park.

West Indies bowled tighter than they did the previous evening, but there were no breakthroughs for the home team after India resumed from their overnight total of 80 without loss.

The Caribbean side conceded its first boundary of the day in the 10th over of the session when Jaiswal pulled fast bowler Alzarri Joseph for his seventh four to reach 50 from 104 balls and give India their first-century opening stand in two years.

A single off Cornwall carried Sharma to his 50 from 106 balls shortly after the refreshments break, and he continued to impose his will with resolute batting.

West Indies suffered a setback to their plans when Cornwall left the field after experiencing discomfort in his chest.
