BIRMINGHAM, England, CMC – Alzarri Joseph finished with four wickets as England was dismissed for 376 in their first innings on Saturday’s second day of the final Test at Edgbaston.
Resuming from tea on 274 for seven, England overhauled West Indies’ first innings of 282 to lead by 94 eventually.
Joseph finished with four 122, new ball partner Jayden Seales claimed three for 79 while Shamar Joseph picked up two for 63.
Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, unbeaten at tea on 57, fell agonizingly short of his maiden Test hundred when he was dismissed for 95 after facing 109 balls and striking a dozen fours and one six.
He put on 108 for the eighth wicket with Chris Woakes, who ensured the tail wagged by belting 62 off 78 deliveries with seven fours.
Former Test captain Joe Root made 87 earlier, while current skipper Ben Stokes struck 54 to aid England’s recovery after the hosts lost two early wickets to tumble to 54 for five inside the first hour of the morning.
Root counted seven fours in a knock lasting 124 balls, while Stokes struck five fours and a six off 69 deliveries, the pair posting 115 for the sixth wicket.
Root put on a further 62 for the seventh wicket with Smith before finally departing with his second hundred of the series on the horizon.
