CRICKET-Mayers fifty powers Abu Dhabi win

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates, CMC – Left-hander Kyle Mayers struck a swift half-century to propel Team Abu Dhabi to a seven-wicket win over Delhi Bulls off the last ball in the Abu Dhabi T10 here Thursday.

In pursuit of 98 at the Zayed Cricket Stadium, Team Abu Dhabi entered the last over with six runs required for victory but lost Mayers to the fourth delivery, holing out to deep square.

With two needed off the final ball, left-arm seamer Wasim Akram sent down a leg stump full toss, which went away for four leg byes as Team Abu Dhabi sneaked home.

Mayers was at the heart of the run chase, the West Indies opener clobbering 61 from 30 balls with five fours and five sixes.

To set up the win, he dominated a first wicket stand of 80, first with Tom Banton (15) and then with Leus du Plooy (7).

Veteran former West Indies medium pacer Dwayne Bravo finished with a single wicket.

Choosing to bat first earlier, the Bulls were carried by Adam Lyth’s 24-ball unbeaten 39 and Rovman Powell’s 20-ball 31.

The West Indies Twenty20 captain Powell smashed a brace of fours and sixes, scoring 71 for the third wicket with Lyth, who counted two fours and three sixes.

In the final game of the day, captain Kieron Pollard (14), Odean Smith (0), and Mark Deyal (0) all failed as New York Strikers went down by six wickets to Samp Army.
