Miami, CMC – A congressman in the United States has condemned Jamaica’s statement on Cuba and has warned that the country will face consequences. On the opening day of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government meeting in St Kitts earlier this week, Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness highlighted Cuba’s economic hardship, energy shortages, and growing humanitarian challenges.
Holness, the outgoing CARICOM chair, said Jamaica stands for democracy, human rights, accountability, and open, market-based economies.
“We must address the situation in Cuba with clarity and courage,” Holness said, noting that Cubans are grappling with severe economic hardship, energy shortages, and mounting humanitarian strain.
“A prolonged crisis in Cuba will not remain confined to Cuba. It will affect migration, security, and economic stability across the Caribbean Basin. It is, therefore, important that we carefully consider this matter and take collective action,” the Prime Minister said.
But in a quote tweet referencing Holness’s comments late yesterday, Congressman Carlos Giménez accused Jamaica of covering up for the Cuban dictatorship. Giménez, who is a member of the House Committees on Armed Services and Homeland Security, added that Jamaica will face the consequences.
“I harshly condemn this & find it lamentable that the JLP would cover up for the moribund dictatorship in #Cuba, when the Castro regime repeatedly intervened in # Jamaica’s politics to exacerbate partisan tensions & undermine the JLP! Jamaica will face the consequences!”
Giménez, who represents Florida’s 28th Congressional District, was born in Havana in 1954 and immigrated to the United States with his family following the Cuban Revolution.
