GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM) has expressed its shock at the “sudden” death of Trinidadian journalist, communicator, and activist Nylah Ali.
Ali died on Monday, and the ACM said her death “has shocked her media colleagues in and around the Caribbean.
”Nylah would be remembered for her fearlessness, activism, commitment to journalism, and most of all, her guidance and advice to the ACM over the years.”
The regional umbrella body said that her vision for a media association to protect the interest of media workers in Trinidad and Tobago had its genesis in the organization that can be considered the “Express Chapter” of the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago( MATT).
“This chapter would later become what we know as MATT between 1986/87. She was also present for developing the ACM in 2000 as part of several collaborative activities aimed at birthing a regional media body.
“Nylah was also responsible for the development of ACM’s logo. For many years she offered her support to ACM in the form of guidance and to assist with planning and logistics for many of ACM activities,” the ACM said, adding that it remembers her as “a relentless activist in the promotion of press freedom.
”Even though Nylah left mainstream media, she followed with keen interest many issues that affect journalists and journalism throughout the region and remained in touch providing support to her colleagues in many ways,” the ACM said, offering condolences to Nylah’s family and friends.
