HAMILTON, Bermuda, CMC — Steps have been taken to close down a company headed by an American to the Bermuda government loaned US$800,000 to set up a recording studio on the island.
According to a notice from the Attorney-General’s Chambers, the government filed a petition for the company, Savvy Entertainment Limited, to be wound up.
The company is owned by Anthony Blakey, a music promoter from Atlanta, Georgia, who secured a loan from the government in 2018 to set up the Savvy recording studio in Dockyard at the island’s west end.
But the project never got off the ground, and Blakey disappeared and is believed to be on the run in the United States.
Extradition proceedings have begun to bring him back to Bermuda, where he faces a charge of obtaining a money transfer by deception.
A demand-for-payment notice issued in June 2019 said Blakey had defaulted on $778,204 of the loan.
The notice states that the Ministry of Transport filed a petition on December 20 last year and will be heard next week.
