BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – Police say they are awaiting the outcome of a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of the death of a 17-year-old boy, whose body was discovered a week after he left home with a friend to go fishing.
Police said that a search party found the decomposing body of Alwin Marin Jr in a remote area of Belize City known as Dykes, one week after the bullet-ridden body of his friend, Jaheil Westby, had been found.
“The body has been retrieved and taken to the forensic laboratory, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. This report was made from last Friday, and from then, searches were being conducted in the area, and the body of Jaheil Westby was found on Friday. They were together, so it’s a case we were following up on from the day,’ said Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, the head of the National Crime Investigation Branch.
He said that the crime scene suggests that the two boys were running away from someone, adding, “That is what the scene is showing, that they both ran away from that area in separate directions”.
Marin Jr.’s mother, Patricia Cardinez, who was among the searchers when the body was found, said she believes her son was killed over something as unexpected as a horse, a detail that has struck a nerve across the city.
Media reports here said that in recent times, loose and stolen horses have become a growing problem, frustrating residents and authorities alike.
Police believe that the deaths of Westby and Marin Jr may be connected.
