BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – Belize is preparing for negative impacts from Hurricane Beryl. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect from Belize City to Corozal, including Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker islands.
Prime Minister John Briceno warned the nation on Wednesday that although the eye is not expected to pass over Belize, the system is a big storm, and damaging effects can possibly be felt from Belize City to the northern districts of Corozal and Orange Walk, as well as Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.
He urged residents, especially in the north, to brace for strong winds and heavy rainfall due to the hurricane’s proximity to the northern half of Belize.
The prime minister said residents in the north should prepare for flooding, especially those in low-lying flood-prone areas.
He noted that strong winds may cause some structural damage to homes and could result in losses in the agricultural sector.
In an advisory early Thursday, the country’s National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) said Hurricane Beryl was located about 485 miles east of Corozal Town.
Although a direct landfall on Belize is unlikely, the system will likely produce moderate to heavy rainfall across Belize starting on Thursday and continuing through the next 24 to 36 hours as it moves across the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
Rainfall totals of 4 to 6 inches are possible with locally higher amounts, especially over the northern districts.
