Barbados government strongly condemns recent attack on Qatar

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Barbados has become the latest Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country after Antigua and Barbuda and Guyana to condemn the recent Israeli strikes on Qatar while expressing its “solidarity” with the government and people of the West Asian country.

“Violations of a country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, wherever and whenever they occur, are a breach of international law and the mutually agreed norms that have supported the stability of the international states’ system since the Second World War. Maintaining the integrity of these norms is essential to international peace and security,” Bridgetown said in a statement.

It said the priority for the global community and the principal stakeholders in the Middle East and in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region “should be an immediate and long-term ceasefire in Gaza, the return of all hostages and prisoners, and a recommitment to achieving the two-state solution that would allow the people of Israel, Palestine and the entire region to live in harmony.

“Barbados remains committed to global peace and security and to the principles that support their realisation in our time,” the statement added.

At least six people were killed in the area where the attack took place, which is surrounded by many embassies and consulates, including a residential area in Doha where many people live.

The international community is calling on all parties to the war in the Middle East to return to the negotiating table, stating that force cannot bring peace and that dialogue and negotiation are the fundamental solution to this war.

Earlier this week, Antigua and Barbuda and Guyana joined the chorus of international condemnation against Israel’s unprecedented attack on senior Hamas figures in Qatar, saying the action does not help the cause in ending the war in Gaza nor in achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.
