LONDON, CMC—Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley held talks with the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, on Friday. Mottley said it was important for the two countries to find everyday “things necessary for us to have a healthy global commons that can benefit all of us.

“We’ve had the opportunity to meet several times since you’ve assumed office,” Mottley told reporters, speaking next to Sir Keir from inside No 10 Downing Street.

In a message she posted later on Instagram, Prime Minister Mottley said, “We discussed matters related to the deepening crisis in Haiti, regional security, the climate crisis, development, and ways to strengthen further the longstanding relationship between Barbados and the United Kingdom.”

Sir Keir said the United Kingdom’s history with Barbados is “long and rich,” adding that it was a “pleasure and a privilege” to welcome Mottley, leader of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) since 2008, to Downing Street.

“We’ve known each other many years as good colleagues and now as leaders who work together and think alike.”

Barbados transitioned to a republic within the Commonwealth in 2021, replacing the monarchy with a ceremonial president.

Mottley said it was important for her country and the UK to find common ground on “things necessary to have a healthy global commons that can benefit all of us.

“The world in which we live is very different, even from when you assumed office in July.,” she added.
