BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados Central Bank with discuss the issue of food security when it holds its Caribbean Economic Forum on Wednesday, July 12, under the theme “Addressing Food Security in the Caribbean.”

The Bank’s Chief of Corporate Communications, Novaline Brewster, said the idea for the theme came from a report of the World Food Programme which stated that “52 percent of the population of the English-speaking Caribbean, some 3.7 million people, are food insecure”.

“We felt it important to explore the reasons for this and, critically, how we can address it,” Brewster said.

Director of the World Food Programme’s Caribbean Multi-Country Office, Regis Chapman, Assistant Secretary General of Economic Integration, Innovation and Development at the CARICOM Secretariat, Joseph Cox and S. Michael McLaughlin, co-founder and volunteer Secretary Treasure of the Non-profit organization Trees That Feed Foundation will be the panelists on Wednesday’s forum which is carded to begin at 8 am, which will be live-streamed on the bank’s Facebook page and YouTube Channel.

Brewster said the bank’s goal is for viewers to walk away with a better understanding of what contributes to food insecurity and how they can help mitigate it in their communities.

The hope is also for stakeholders “to come up with actionable insights that policymakers can use to address this problem at a national and regional level,” Brewster said.

The Caribbean Economic Forum is part of the Central Bank of Barbados’ public outreach and thought-leadership program.
