NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – Former prime minister Perry Christie is recovering in hospital after successfully undergoing a corrective procedure after he was admitted to Doctors Hospital with symptoms of an acute heart condition.

A statement issued by the Director of Communications in the Office of The Prime Minister, Latrae Rahming, said Christie underwent the procedure last Saturday.

The statement said the procedure was performed by interventional cardiologist Dr. Bimal Francis and his team. Christie is managed by a team headed by Dr. Francis (cardiology), intensivist Dr. Adrian Cargill, and cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Duane Sands.

“He is now convalescing remarkably well. He is awake, alert, and in excellent spirits,” Rahming said in the statement, adding that Christie is expected to remain in hospital for several days.

Christie is a member of the Eminent Persons Group, established by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). This group has initiated and oversees the Community’s provision of Good office support in designated priority areas, including security, governance, the electoral process, and long-term development planning and advocacy in Haiti.

The group, which also includes former St. Lucia prime minister Dr. Kenny Anthony and former Jamaica prime minister Bruce Golding, is liaising with key international partners and agencies.
