BAHAMAS-Former deputy prime minister recommended for the head of the state post

NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – Prime Minister Phillip Davis Tuesday said he had recommended the Bahama’s first female deputy prime minister and minister of national security to become the country’s new Governor General.

In a statement, Davis said that he hopes the recommendation of Cynthia Alexandria Pratt, affectionately known as “Mother,” will “be widely accepted as a representation of Bahamians everywhere.”

She will replace Sir Cornelius A. Smith, appointed Governor-General on June 29 2018, and indicated his intention to demit office on August 31 this year.

He said by the provisions of Article 32 of the Constitution. He requested on August 11 that Britain’s King Charles appoint Mrs. Cynthia Pratt as head of state, effective September 1, 2023.

Prime Minister Davis said the life of Mrs. Pratt, 78, “is endowed with service, including contributions to nursing, education, politics, sports, and religion.”

She served as a member of parliament for 15 years, also serving as the deputy to the Governor General on several occasions.

Since leaving active, Mrs. Pratt has dedicated herself to roles as an ordained minister and Co-Chair of the Urban Renewal Commission.

“I am confident that the appointment of Cynthia Pratt will be widely accepted as a representation of Bahamians everywhere due to the character and contributions which distinguish her as a nationalist of the highest order,” Davis said.
