WASHINGTON, CMC – Bahamas will host the fourth Inter-American Meeting of Ministers and High-Level Authorities on Sustainable Development in early October, the Organization of American States has announced.
It said that the October 2-4 meeting would focus on “the threat of climate change,” adding that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country and the OAS General Secretariat signed the agreement on the event in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington.
OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro stressed that collective action by the region is crucial to address the challenges of climate change and move towards sustainable development.
“Ambassador Neymour, thank you and your government for organizing this important event. Together, we will build a roadmap enabling countries to achieve their ambitious climate action goals and objectives. The OAS stands ready to support you in this task,” Almagro said as he addressed Bahamas Ambassador Chet Neymour.
Neymour said combating climate change is high on the list of priorities for his country and CARICOM countries.
“The same comparative advantages that the OAS has demonstrated in its work in other spheres, regarding political convening and agenda setting, capacity building and technical assistance, can and must shape the work that the OAS does to advance climate action,” he said.
