BUDAPEST, Hungary, CMC – Jamaicans Oblique Seville and Rohan Forde took different routes to the men’s 100-meter final on Sunday’s day two of the World Athletics Championships.
Seville, one of the fastest qualifiers from Saturday’s heats, was once again impressive in winning semi-final three in 9.90 seconds.
He was followed home by Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo in 9.98 as the second qualifier. Still, there was a shock result for title-holder American Fred Kerley, who could only finish third in 10.02, to miss out on the final.
The 22-year-old Forde, meanwhile, was forced to sweat on his qualification after finishing third in the second semi-final in a personal best of 9.95 seconds.
He eventually advanced as one of the two fastest qualifiers, United States’ Christian Coleman (9.88) and Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes (9.93) – the former Anguilla sprinter – clinching their spots in the final as the top two finishers in semi-final two.
There was no joy for Jamaica national champion Rohan Watson, who was sixth in 10.07 in the first semi-final. At the same time, Guyana’s Emanuel Archibald also tasted disappointment, finishing sixth in the second semi-final despite clocking a personal best of 10.13 seconds.
The final will be run off Sunday at 7:10 pm (1:10 pm Eastern Caribbean time).
