TOKYO, Japan, CMC – Jamaicans Shericka Jackson and Bryan Levell finished third in the women’s and men’s 200 metres, respectively, to bring the curtain down on the sprint events at the World Athletics Championships here on Friday.

Jackson, the 2023 World champion, crossed the finish line in 22.18 seconds behind Great Britain’s Amy Hunt in 22.14 seconds and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden of the USA, who was a comfortable winner in a world-leading time of 21.68 seconds.

With her victory, Jefferson-Wooden became the first woman to win both the 100m and 200m at a World Championships since Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 2013 and the fourth woman in history to achieve the feat.

Anthonique Strachan of the Bahamas was disqualified after a false start.

Meanwhile, Levell finished in a personal best time of 19.64 seconds to finish behind Americans Noah Lyles and Kenneth Bednarek and claim the bronze medal.

Lyles sprinted to his fourth successive world title, crossing the line in a speedy 19.52 seconds, with Bednarek second in 19.58 and Levell third in a personal best time of 19.64 seconds.

Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo was a close fourth in 19.65 seconds.

Levell got off to a great start and led at the halfway mark with a split of 10.03, with Bednarek, Lyles, and Tebogo right on his tail.

But Lyles turned on the boosters, gaining and then pulling away from the 21-year-old Levell with each stride.

In another final, Jamaica’s Jordan Scott finished fifth in the men’s triple jump with his effort measured at 17.21 metres.

The event was won by Pedro Pichardo of Portugal with a world-leading leap of 17.91 metres, with Italy’s Andrea Dallavalle second with a jump of 17.64 metres and Cuba’s Lazaro Martinez (17.49) taking the bronze.

Shiann Salmon of Jamaica finished a disappointing eighth in the final of the women’s 400 metre hurdles in 56.27 seconds.

Her compatriot Natoya Goule-Toppin failed to advance to the final of the women’s 800 metres after placing fifth in Heat 1 in 1:59.58.
