
TOKYO, Japan, CMC – Oblique Seville became the first Jamaican to capture gold in the men’s 100 metres at the World Athletic Championships in a decade when he stormed to victory here on Sunday.
However, Olympic champion Julien Alfred was stunned in the women’s equivalent and had to settle for bronze.
Seville clocked a personal best time of 9.77 seconds to cross the finish line ahead of compatriot Kishane Thompson (9.82) and Olympic champion Noah Lyles of the USA in a season’s best time of 9.89 seconds.
Meanwhile, USA’s Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, the fastest woman in the world this year, blazed to victory in the women’s 100 metres in a championship record time of 10.61 seconds.
Jamaica’s Tia Clayton claimed silver in a personal best time of 10.74 seconds, while Alfred of Saint Lucia had to settle for bronze in a disappointing time of 10.84 seconds.
