ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Feb.- The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda is urging residents and business owners to tighten security measures, warning that simple oversights are making homes and commercial properties vulnerable to crime.
Through its Community Policing Unit, the force this week issued a comprehensive set of safety recommendations to reduce opportunities for theft and break-ins nationwide. Officers stressed that many reported burglaries are preventable and often stem from unsecured entry points and poor visibility around properties.
“Most burglars enter through unlocked doors,” the advisory noted, as police encouraged residents to lock doors and windows at all times – even when at home. The force is also recommending installing strong deadbolt locks, solid-core or metal doors, and adding security features, such as rods or reinforced locking systems, to sliding doors.
Travel plans shared publicly on social media were highlighted as another growing security risk. Police warned that announcing trips can signal that a property is unoccupied. Residents leaving the island are advised to notify a trusted neighbour, arrange for mail collection, and double-check that all entry points are secured before departure.
The police force also pointed out that maintaining clear sightlines around properties is another key safety measure. Overgrown bushes and trees near windows can create hiding spots for intruders. Keeping yards tidy and well-maintained improves visibility and reduces the chances of criminals operating undetected.
Lighting was described as one of the most effective deterrents. Officers are recommending motion-sensor lighting around entrances and along property perimeters. Security cameras and alarm systems, they added, provide early warning and can discourage unlawful activity before it escalates.
Businesses are also being encouraged to strengthen internal safety protocols. Police advise that employees be trained in emergency procedures and remain alert during opening and closing hours. Whenever possible, operators should avoid closing alone and remain watchful for suspicious activity in surrounding areas.
According to the police, community cooperation remains central to the force’s crime prevention strategy. Residents are encouraged to build relationships with neighbours, participate in neighbourhood watch initiatives, and report suspicious activity promptly.
The advisory forms part of ongoing community policing efforts aimed at strengthening public awareness, improving safety practices, and reducing preventable crime nationwide.
